Analysis of solar type II radio bursts in conjunction  with multi-wavelength observations

A. Shanmugaraju

Abstract

The Sun was continuously monitored in the frequency range 30-80 MHz on a regular basis using the new radio spectrograph (Madurai Solar Radio Spectrograph, MSRS) which is now located at the Radio Astronomy Centre, Ooty. We have collected data on various types of solar radio bursts using this spectrograph. In the present work, ten type II bursts observed during March - April 1998 and August 1998 have been analysed in conjunction with other ground based observations from Culgoora and Hiraiso. The associated activities have also been investigated using multi-wavelength observations obtained from YOKOH, LASCO and WAVE. Comparison with LASCO data reveal that, while most of the bursts in our sample are associated with energetic flares  on the Sun, there are a few that may have been associated with CMEs/bright front features. Comparison with WAVE data reveal that, while in general, the dynamic spectrum do not extend below 25 MHz or so, there are instances where the type II dynamic spectrum can be seen extending down to the WAVE spectrum.
