Solar Flares are intense brightenings on the surface of the Sun
They can exhibit temperature of many millions of degrees and
energies the equivalent of a billion megatons of TNT.
However, they happen on all scales we can see, and small ones might cause the heating of the corona.
They appear in all wavelengths of the light and are observed from the ground and in space.
